It is with great pride that we acknowledge the contributions of the following staff and student assistants. They are and have been a joy to work with. Their dedication to the Center is reflected in the quality of our products, information delivery systems, and customer service.

We also extend our gratitude to the Department of Plant Sciences' Personnel/Clerical Unit and Business Units for their ongoing support - we couldn't do it without you! We also acknowledge ANR Communication Services - Web Support Services, especially Karl Krist, for server administration and programming support for the Postharvest Web site.

STUDENT ASSISTANTS

Francisco Mena

Francisco Mena

"Frisco" brought an exceptionally good set of computer and research skills with him when he joined our team. He kept busy researching updates to our Postharvest Yellowpages, converting our library of VHS video tapes into digital format, scanning older photos in preparation for our 30th Anniversary Celebration activities, digitizing slides and audio tapes for on-line presentation. No matter the project or challenge, he was willing to creatively work towards a solution.

Marcelle Levine

We were delighted when, in March of 2007, we were able to add Marcelle to our team. She assisted us with orders, assembling publications, researching and updating our CA 100 publication, and helping us with registration at our events. We wish her well in her future endeavors.

Photo: Sameeia Iqbal

Sameeia Iqbal
Sameeia joined our team in April 2006, and her first project was to assist with converting over 500 produce photos into thumbnail and full-sized GIF documents for our website. Since then she has cheerfully tackled a variety of desktop publishing and data comparison projects, and has also assisted with assembling several publications.

  Navid Ghanbaran
With a cheerful "I'm back" each time he returned to the office, Navid very capably co-tackled the very large project of preparing over 500 photos for our website. We wish him good luck on his goal of pursuing his DDS.

Anil Muhammed
We truly value what Anil has given the Center. His responsibilities have included setting up and populating the publications database, and design and implementation of the new Postharvest Web site, which we brought on-line during September 2002. Anil did a superior job in such a short time - creating and implementing new techniques and web interface concepts to make pages more user friendly and information more easily accessible.

Anil provided fresh ideas while respecting the constraints limiting institutional web development. He did an excellent job of presenting the initial design structure to our web review team and has worked closely with the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) programmer to modify and institute ANR-developed database tools to work within our structure.

Anil modified graphics and designed server-side-include (SSI) files for the web page headers and footers - incorporating the new postharvest logo, navigation bar, and search component into a visually attractive and useful design.

The new Postharvest web site "drills-down" extensively and Anil has kept track of these files and their interconnectedness with ease. The new site will be an award winner.

From January 2001 through July 2001, Anil updated and maintained Postharvest web pages and was instrumental in the development of the Postharvest Horticultural Series publication 22 on CD [CA Bibliography (1981 - 2000) and CA Recommendations, 2001].

The goal of this project was to provide, on a CD, the ability to search a bibliography of Controlled Atmosphere (CA) references, print the selected references, and view/print additional CA papers. The CD was distributed at the CA 2001 Conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, July 8, 2001. The final product is:

  • a stand-alone hybrid CD using a web browser interface which is included on the CD so that the user does not need to be connected to the Internet
  • a search component provides the ability to search from approximately 2,900 bibliographic reference citations, by author and keyword. The search results are extracted from the original data, and all citations meeting the search criteria are displayed as a group, not simply highlighted as in a pdf search.
  • help file included with the search function
  • the 5-volume bibliography, from 1981 through 2000 is included as pdf files
  • CA Requirements and Recommendations and CA for Insect Disinfestation papers are included as 163 pdf documents accessible from an html Table of Contents
  • consistent headers and footers with links
  • links to the Adobe Acrobat site to help accommodate disability issues
  • installation instructions for Mac and PC included with the CD
  • Browser and Acrobat Reader included on CD
This project would not exist if Anil had not been working on the project. His hard work, analytical skills, focus, understanding of the big picture, troubleshooting skills, and winning attitude enabled us to produce a quality product in time for distribution at the conference. In the process, some of his responsibilities were: learning new technology for formatting and creating pdf files for a hybrid application; creating 163 pdf documents and keeping file names in required format for a hybrid application and web interface; scanning 1989 - 1993 and 1981 - 1985 bibliographies and creating MS Word files for each; writing HTML code for 25 files which linked to 163 files; creating server side include (SSI) files for the web page headers and footers; creating/burning and testing master CD for hybrid environment with Mac software; finding a font file to add to the CD to solve a degree symbol print problem; testing/printing on various systems and platforms.

Jennifer Ante
Jennifer began working for the Center in April 2001 and graduated from UC Davis in June 2003. Jennifer's responsibilities included: customer service; processing publication orders; maintaining quarterly records of sales; documenting our new order and sales tracking system, and updating the on-line postharvest resources directory.

Jennifer applied focus and attention to detail when she entered citations into the database of postharvest references. Jennifer compared the existing 591 database entries to the original citations and made corrections to the database. She verified, changed the format of, or corrected 1,400 author names in the 1997 - 2000 database. She made further proofs and corrections and entered 86 new citations into the 1997 - 2000 database noting conflicts in author names and incorrect formatting. The outcome of this effort was Postharvest Horticultural Series publication 22 on CD [CA Bibliography (1981 - 2000) and CA Recommendations, 2001].

Mon Mon
