International Curriculum on Postharvest Technology of Horticultural Crops

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

University. The University of Florida (UF) is a major, public, comprehensive, land-grant, research university. The state's oldest, largest and most comprehensive university, UF is among the nation's most academically diverse public universities. UF has a long history of established programs in international education, research and service. It is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities that belong to the Association of American Universities. UF has a beautiful 2,000-acre campus, with the northeast corner listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The Postharvest Program at the University of Florida is one of the largest in the U.S., reflecting the large size of the horticulture industry in the state and the fact that almost all vegetable crops and non-citrus fruit crops, as well as about 15% of the citrus crop are marketed as fresh products. The vast majority of these fruits and vegetables are shipped outside the state. The postharvest group at UF includes faculty in the departments of Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Environmental Horticulture, Food & Resource Economics, Food Science & Human Nutrition, Horticultural Sciences, and Plant Pathology, as well as Florida Department of Citrus and U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists with courtesy faculty appointments. The postharvest scientists at UF have organized to form the Center for Food Distribution and Retailing, which aims to approach research concerning the whole distribution chain for perishable foods in a multidisciplinary way.

City. Gainesville is just a short drive from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, offering unique opportunities to visit and interact with natural, historical, and entertaining areas of Florida. Thanks to the area's unique geography of underground limestone formations and the Florida Aquifer, hundreds of freshwater springs are within short distances of Gainesville. The city of Gainesville is known for its 'urban forest', offering a wealth of greenspace and city-managed parks for general recreation. The Gainesville area has mild winters and warm summers, with a 255-day growing season. There is an average of 2,800 hours of sunshine annually, with the January average high temperature equal to 18C and the June average high temperature equal to 32C. The population of the Gainesville urban area is just over 220,000, including 48,000 University of Florida students. In September of 1995 Gainesville was ranked by Money Magazine as the best place to live in America. For five consecutive years, it has been tapped as Florida's most livable city and has ranked among the leaders in the nation.

Language Classes for Guest Students. The UF English Language Institute (ELI) offers intensive English programs that prepare students for using English in the real world. The ELI fosters the learning of the English language and the culture of the United States of America through its regularly scheduled intensive English program and its various other programs scheduled on demand. The ELI at UF is the only English Language Institute to offer Language Assistants as part of its Listening/Speaking courses. Language Assistants are university-age fluent English speakers. Two Language Assistants are assigned to each Listening/Speaking class. They work with the Listening/Speaking teacher for each level to provide four hours a week of speaking to practice the language learned in the class. They practice informal, conversational English and teach about U.S. culture. They take advantage of Florida's climate and meet in an atmosphere conducive to informal language practice. The Listening/Speaking teachers and Language Assistants plan different activities, language games, and discussions based on the needs and interests of the class. Tuition for a 6-week session (8 hours per week) is $850.

Language Classes for Students to be Sent Abroad. The UF Language Learning Center (LLC) provides multimedia support for language learning. Besides formal language courses (including Greek, Italian and Spanish), the Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC) program offers one-credit discussion sections in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German taught in tandem with content courses in anthropology, art, business, cinema, economics, history, international relations, literature, Latin American studies, law, music, philosophy, political science, public relations, religion, sociology and sports. The program now offers approximately 15 language enhancement sections every academic year (Fall and Spring). The Center for Greek Studies at UF assists in overseas study opportunities, including a student exchange agreement with the University of Thessaloniki.

Possible Integration of ICPT with Other Studies. The ICPT may be integrated with undergraduate and graduate programs at UF in Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Food Science & Human Nutrition, and Horticultural Sciences.
