International Curriculum on Postharvest Technology of Horticultural Crops
|
Grant No: P116J040047
Partners: University of California at Davis, CA; University of Florida at Gainesville, FL; Texas A&M University at College Station, TX; University of Foggia, IT; University of Cordoba, ES; University of Thessaly, GR
The aim of the program is to develop an internationally based curriculum focused on increasing professional skills of graduate students on postharvest technology of horticultural crops, including fresh-cut produce. Contents of the curriculum will cover the aspects related to postharvest biology, physiology, and pathology of horticultural crops, quality assessment, food safety assurance, equipment engineering, logistics and technology of perishable transportation, marketing aspects related to fruit and vegetables, and international legislation. The US and EU collaborators will work together to transform the key courses into web-based presentations that can be accessed by students interested in postharvest biology and technology of horticultural perishables at all 6 universities.
The Certificate program will consist of a minimum of 18 credits to be obtained taking courses (12 credits) and carrying out a short individual research project (6 credits) at two or more institutions (one in EU and one in US consortium). Emphasis will be given to laboratory activities in an international context, with original research activities carried out by students at both their home and host institutions. Improvement of foreign language skills of participating students will be a side objective to be reached both before and during the visits. The project will consist of 2 phases; phase 1 will take place during the first year when preparatory aspects of the international training will be discussed and planned (i.e. recruitment strategies, agreements on tuition fees and credit transfers). Phase 2 will take place in the following 2 years with the actual student mobility and continued curricular development.
