International Curriculum on Postharvest Technology of Horticultural Crops

UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI FOGGIA

University. The Università degli Studi di Foggia was instituted as an independent university in 1999, but it's been actively functioning as a separate campus of the University of Bari since 1989.

It is located in the city of Foggia, in the northern part of the Apulia Region (south-east of the Country). Presently incorporates 5 schools (Agriculture, Law, Medicine, Economics, and Humanities) and 12 Departments. About 14,000 students are presently enrolled at UNIFG. The School of Agriculture is located in downtown Foggia and counts 57 faculty members. Present curricula offer include 4 undergraduate/lower 3-year programs (Food Science & Technology, Agriculture Science, Marketing of Agriculture products, Viticulture & Enology), 2 undergraduate/upper 2-year programs (Food Science & Technology, Agriculture Science), 4 graduate doctoral programs (Sustainable agriculture, Food biotechnology, Plant and crop protection, Management of Innovation in Food and Agriculture systems of the Mediterranean region).

An average of 200 new students are enrolled every year.

Activities in postharvest related fields include a doctorate subprograms on Postharvest technology of horticultural crops in the Med Region, and R&D work on several aspects of postharvest technology including quality evaluation, CA/MA application to whole and fresh-cut produce, equipment optimization. Postharvest research group presently include 4 faculties, 1 research assistant, and is temporarily joined by 1 post-doc and 4 graduate students.

City. Foggia is located in the south-east of Italy, in the Apulia region (at very "spur" of the "boot"). The city population is 150.000. It is well connected by train either to Rome or to Milan and it represent an important node in the national railway system. Climate is temperate with hot summers and mild winters. Rainfall is not very high. The city is located in a very flat land (Tavoliere) surrounded by mountains to the north and to the west. The economy of the area is mainly based on agriculture (mainly winter vegetables and processing tomatoes, and durum wheat), and tourism (especially the Mount Gargano coast and the national park). Language Classes for Guest Students. The Office for International Relations of UNIFG setup 2 classes of Italian every year, which usually take place before Fall quarter (September) and before Spring quarter (March). Class level is for beginner-intermediate and it is offered free of charge to foreign students involved in programs with UNIFG.

Language Classes for Students to be Sent Abroad. The School of Agriculture of UNIFG offers English classes, within regular curricula (beginner-intermediate-advanced level).


Possible Integration of ICPT with Other Studies. Not discussed yet.
