About the Postharvest Technology Short Course...

The Postharvest Technology of Horticultural Crops Short Course is an intensive two-week study of current technologies and best practices associated with the postharvest handling of fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables and ornamentals in California. This course is designed specifically for produce industry, government or academic professionals interested in current advances in the postharvest technology of horticultural crops. It is particularly of interest to technical professionals responsible for quality assurance, research and extension activities related to fresh produce quality, safety and marketability. The lecture plus field trip option is limited to 55 participants, and the lecture-only option is limited 25 participants. Enrollment will be handled on a first-paid, first-enrolled basis.

SPECIAL EVENTS FOR 2008

30th Anniversary Celebration of the Postharvest Technology Short Course
This year is the 100th year Anniversary Celebration of the UC Davis Campus and a very special milestone for the Postharvest Technology Short Course. To mark the 30th annual offering of the Postharvest Technology Short Course a special optional one day 30th Anniversary Celebration and Symposium is scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2008, to celebrate 30 years postharvest educational outreach excellence and chart new directions for continued success of the postharvest program at UC Davis. Please join us for this special done day event that will provide an opportunity for past and present short course participants to meet with leaders from industry, academia and government to chart new directions in research and educational outreach on important high-priority postharvest technology issues. The enrollment fee for the 30th Anniversary Celebration is $150 per person and includes admission to the full day of technical sessions, symposium materials and morning and afternoon refreshment breaks and lunch. Retirement Dinner for Dr. Adel Kader
Following the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Postharvest Technology Short Course, an optional Retirement Dinner will be held to honor the career and accomplishments of Dr. Adel Kader, who was reponsible for organizing the Postharvest Technology Short Course for many years. Come join friends and colleagues in honoring Dr. Adel Kader's 30 plus years of service to UC Davis and the greater Postharvest community at-large. This special retirement dinner is scheduled for Saturday evening, June 21st at the ARC Ballroom. The cost is $35 per person. SHORT COURSE INSTRUCTION TOPICS

  • An overview of the postharvest biology of horticultural crop
  • Maturity and maturity indices
  • Measuring quality, flavor, color, and aroma
  • Understanding, implementing and managing produce food safety programs
  • Harvesting systems, preparation for market, packinghouse facilities and equipment, packaging, containers, unitization, cull utilization
  • Produce Shipment Pre-Cooling: methods, evaluation of efficiency
  • Produce Storage: methods, facilities, equipment, management of environmental conditions including controlled atmospheres
  • Ethylene: treatments, exclusion and removal
  • Transport: systems, loading patterns, environmental control, use of modified atmospheres
  • Sanitation and other procedures related to decay and insect control
  • Standardization and inspection, quality evaluation and control
  • Energy use in postharvest technology procedures
  • Harvesting and postharvest handling systems for various commodities
  • Marketing fresh produce: socioeconomic and environmental considerations
  • An overview of current postharvest research at the University of California

Short Course Format: The first week (Monday through Friday) is spent on intensive lectures and discussions as well as hands on laboratory sessions on the UC Davis campus.

The optional second week (Monday through Friday) is field tour covering selected packinghouses, cooling and storage facilities, produce distribution centers, field harvest, packing, and transportation facilities in California. The tour’s first stop is in Sacramento, then the bus travels as far south as Bakersfield, continues west towards the Salinas area, and then the final stop is in the San Francisco/Oakland area.

ENROLLMENT and LODGING INFORMATION

The 1-Week enrollment fee of $1300 includes all classroom instruction, lab activities, course materials, morning and afternoon coffee breaks, Monday - Friday lunches, and one barbeque dinner. The enrollment to the lecture-only section is limited to 25 participants. NOTE: The 1-Week Session has been filled and a Wait List has been started. The 2-Week enrollment fee of $2100 includes all classroom and field instruction, lab activities, course materials, morning and afternoon coffee breaks, Monday - Friday lunches the first week, one barbeque dinner, and field tour transportation. Enrollment to the two-week section of this Short Course is limited to 55 participants.

We request your enrollment no later than May 30, 2008. Reservations will be made on a first paid, first served basis. There is a limit of 55 for the 2-Week Short Course, and a waiting list will be available for additional registrants.

If your plans change: Refunds, less a $100 processing fee, will be granted if requested no later than June 6, 2008. At that time, you can also discuss sending a substitute. We reserve the right to discontinue, postpone, or combine classes, and to change instructors. Every effort will be made to notify enrollees of any changes or cancellations.

Housing and Meals
Week 1 (Lectures) UC Davis Campus
Participants are responsible for their own housing (reservations and payment) during the first week of the course. Students have three options for housing:

  • Campus Conference Housing. Starting Sunday, June 15, 2008, housing is available in campus student residence halls. The cost is approximately $75 - $80 per day and includes breakfast and dinner. Campus Conference Housing space will be guaranteed to be available only until June 2, 2008, or on a space-available basis after that date.   • Local Hotels and Motels. The City of Davis has a fine selection of lodging options available as well. Please see the Yolo County Visitors' Bureau's Web site. The five accommodations within walking distance of the campus are:

  4. Best Western Palm Court
  5. Aggie Inn

Week 2 (Field Tour) Various California Destinations
Participants in the 2-Week course are required to pay for their Field Tour lodging when they enroll in the class. NOTE: Field tour lodging payments are NOT refundable after May 30, 2008. Please indicate your Single/Double room accommodation preference on the Enrollment Form. This preference will remain the same for the entire Field Tour.

Your field tour lodging fee (whether single or double) will include accommodations in the following destination cities on the tour:

  • June 23 - Visalia, California
  • June 24 - Visalia, California
  • June 25 - Salinas, California
  • June 26 - San Francisco, California
  • CAMPUS and TRAVEL INFORMATION

    Campus Bike Rental. The UC Davis campus is the largest in the entire University of California system (5,300 acres). The Bike Barn offers rental bicycles to help speed your navigation around campus.

    Internet Access. Postharvest Technology Short Course participants may request a 7-day campus guest wireless account. The UC Davis campus has a number of wireless hot spots, including the ARC where we'll be meeting the first week, as well as the Segundo Dining Commons, the Memorial Union, and Shields Library. Please note on the registration form if you would like an account set up for you.

    Air Travel. The closest airport to Davis is Sacramento International (a 25 minute drive); we encourage the 2-Week participants to use this airport as the Field Tour bus completes its route at the Davis campus. Alternatively, San Francisco and Oakland International airports are about a 1.5 hour drive from Davis. It will be possible for Field Tour participants to make personal arrangements for transportation from the last two Bay Area Field Tour stops to the Oakland or San Francisco International Airports.

    The Yolo County Visitors' Bureau provides information on travel to Davis, including airport shuttle and taxi services, and train and bus travel.
