What precautions should we take to have storage and ripening on the same premises?

Question

Info on your website site was very useful, I shall frequently use the same. We are a distribution Centre Cold Store, storing fresh fruits like apples, grapes, citrus etc., and are now adding ripening rooms for bananas. What precautions do we take to have storage & ripening in the same premises? (S.G.)

Answer

It is very important to protect the stored fruits, vegetables, and flowers from exposure to ethylene concentrations above 0.1 ppm. Thus, I recommend that you locate the ripening rooms for bananas in a separate area away from the storage areas. Alternatively, you can have a separate ventilation system for the ripening rooms area that would assure that no ethylene escapes into the storage areas.
